Peterbilt Red falls to Lomax Blue 16-9

Peterbilt played their best game of the season but failed to hold-on in the late innings as reserve pitchers were ineffective.

Score was 9-8 after 7 innings!

Andrew Waddell has been hampered by soreness and discomfort in his golden left arm that has kept him off the mound for the Peterbilt Red team. But when Andrew woke up on Friday the 9th, he felt good enough to give it a try for the Red team in hopes of pulling out a much desired victory.  For 5 innings Waddell was cautiously effective limiting the Blue team to only 3 runs.  In the first 5 innings, Waddell had 6 K’s.

Meanwhile the Lomax Blue team with Jake Hatchett and Travis Hill on the mound for Blue were keeping the game tight only giving up 5 runs.  But in the 6th inning you could start to see both team batters were starting to  get it going.  In top of 6th inning, Lomax Blue scored 4 runs on 3 hits.  The big hit was a triple by Tony Lomax.

In bottom of 6th inning, Peterbilt Red scored 2 runs on 2 hits, a hit batter and an outfield error.  With the score tied 7-7 in top of 7th, Andrew Waddell probably should have turned the game over to their bullpen.  But with Kevin Latham on the sidelines nursing a bruised finger on his throwing hand, the Red team was in a tough spot.  Additional run support with Andrew on the mound could have took some of the pressure off the reserve pitchers.  Facing a Blue lineup that has some tough outs, is hard for any pitcher in the league.

As anyone can see from the linescore. the top of the 8th inning is where the “wheels fell-off”.  Glen Coombs came into the game with Red down by one run.  Throw strikes, let the defense get outs and maybe the Red Team could rally in bottom of 8th to get a win.  Coombs lasted only 5 batters and was relieved by Johnny Birkenstock, who had control issues. Unfortunately, lack of strikes created a parade of “walks” that made scoring easy and no chance for defense to help.  A disappointing finish to an otherwise competitive game.

Hit Leaders:  Lomax BlueTony Lomax (3/5), 3 triples, 4 RBI’s; Travis Hill – (2/3); Kevin Nilsen – (2/4); Otis Edward – (2/4).  Every batter for Blue had at least one hit.  Peterbilt RedJeff Allen – (2/3), Andrew Waddell – (2/4); Drew Fontenot scored 3 times.
